Hyderabad-born Uday Ruddarraju, an alumnus of Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), has been promoted to OpenAI's new CTO of Compute. Unlike many high-ranking peers who graduated from IIT, NIT, or IIIT, Ruddarraju completed his bachelor's degree in Computer Science at CBIT in Hyderabad. After an internship at Amazon, he earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. His career included roles at eBay (2013-2018) as a Software Engineer II and Technical Lead for Cloud and Platforms, at Robinhood (2018-2024) as Senior Director of Engineering and Head of Infrastructure, and at Elon Musk’s xAI in 2024 as Head of Infrastructure Engineering. He joined OpenAI in 2025 as Head of Compute and Infrastructure, where he was instrumental in expanding computing capacity needed to train models including upcoming GPT-5.6.
