Spain is the European country where generative artificial intelligence is most used for accompaniment and mental health support, with 61% of the population resorting to these solutions compared to a European average of 52%, according to the study “The Economy of Loneliness. The Role of AI in Mental Health” by EAE Business School in collaboration with Nex·ia. The article highlights that August, associated with holidays, can increase social isolation for elderly people, young people in semi-empty cities, and families who cannot afford to travel. Economic inequalities are linked to loneliness, with a higher prevalence among those with financial difficulties (36%) compared to those who easily make ends meet (19.4%). Unwanted loneliness affects 13.4% of the Spanish population and generates an estimated economic cost of 14,141 million euros annually, equivalent to 1.17% of GDP, including 6,101 million in direct healthcare costs and 8,039 million from lost productivity. Pilar Saura, Dean of EAE Business School, stated that loneliness is emerging as a major economic and social challenge of the next decade. The rise of single-person households is changing consumption patterns, with predictions that by 2039 there will be 7.7 million single-person households (33.5% of the total), becoming the most common living arrangement in Spain.
