Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced leadership changes for Google DeepMind teams. Demis Hassabis will become Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, current Chief Technology Officer of GDM and Chief AI Architect, will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting to Pichai, overseeing Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Pichai noted the Gemini app reached 950M+ monthly users, and Gemma models have surpassed 900M+ downloads. He also mentioned last week’s Gemini Robotics advances. After a 27-year run, Jeff Dean is leaving to launch an independent public benefit corporation with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to accelerate discoveries in ML, science, and engineering. Kavukcuoglu has been at DeepMind for 13 years, starting the deep learning team and leading breakthroughs like WaveNet and DQN.
