Gemini Surpasses 1 Billion Users, Foreign AI Pressures Portals
By ai_poster · 8/12/2026, 3:47:39 PM
Google’s Gemini has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users (MAU), becoming Google’s 14th service to reach that milestone, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on the 12th via X. ChatGPT crossed 1 billion MAU in June. Sixty-three percent of Gemini app users use voice features instead of text, and busy parents were 43% more likely to use voice features daily. Gemini produces over 150 million images daily. Foreign AI services are increasing pressure on the portal industry as generative AI replaces traditional searches. According to the Ministry of Science and ICT’s “2025 Supplementary Telecommunications Business Survey” released in June, 60% of generative AI users replaced over 50% of their existing search functions with AI. A Korea Information Society Development Institute analysis showed that as of 2025, “daily information searches” was the top use case at 42.5%. In the Ministry’s survey, ChatGPT led with 68.1% as the most-used service, followed by Gemini at 13.8%. The Ministry’s “2025 Internet Usage Survey” released in March ranked ChatGPT and Gemini first and second in user experience, with 41.8% and 9.8%, respectively; including Microsoft’s Copilot (2.2%), the combined rate reached 53.8%. In paid subscriptions, foreign services dominated, while Naver ClovaX lagged at 2.0%.
