OpenAI will shut down its ChatGPT Atlas AI browser on August 9, 2026, giving users six days to save their data. The company announced the move on July 9, calling it a wind-down period of roughly 30 days. Atlas launched on the Mac on October 21, 2025, and ran on Google Chromium with ChatGPT integrated, giving it a lifespan of less than ten months. According to OpenAI, nothing transfers automatically, including bookmarks, open tabs, or history. Users must export bookmarks as an HTML file and import them elsewhere; open tabs should be saved as bookmarks or copied into a document. Cookies and active logins cannot be imported into another browser, and OpenAI warns against sharing exported cookie files, as whoever holds them can pose as the user, meaning users must sign in again everywhere. ChatGPT conversations are unaffected because they are stored with user accounts, not the browser. OpenAI cited security risks, noting discontinued browsers stop receiving constant security maintenance, and a browser sees every page opened and every password typed. Recent incidents with Microsoft Copilot and disguised ad blockers highlighted AI browser vulnerabilities. OpenAI is moving agentic browsing into the new ChatGPT desktop app, with multiple tabs, downloads, and logins intended to work there; Chrome users can use the ChatGPT extension or sidebar.
