Why AI Crawlers Read Your Website Like a Blank Page , And the Deals Y…

AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot often fail to read JavaScript-rendered websites, leaving businesses invisible to AI-powered recommendations. Vercel and MERJ tracked over 500 million GPTBot visits and found zero evidence it executed JavaScript, with GPTBot downloading script files in roughly 11.5% of visits and ClaudeBot in about 23.8%, neither executing a line. Googlebot renders JavaScript, but almost nothing else does. This infrastructure gap means that while Google search sends fewer clicks than ever—83% of searches now end without a website visit when an AI answer appears—AI crawlers building answers for ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity may never see content at all, leading to businesses being "unread" rather than outranked. The financial services sector is particularly affected: remittance and stablecoin businesses in Africa with dynamic widgets fetching rates from APIs are invisible to crawlers, so prospective customers asking AI questions like "cheapest way to send $200 to Mogadishu" or "which stablecoin corridor settles fastest into Kenya" get answers from competitors with static, legible data. Compliance details such as MSB registration, licensing footprint, and settlement times trapped in PDFs or JavaScript sections are also missed. Muck Rack studied 25 million links cited by major AI engines, highlighting that AI answers rely on earned media, reviews, and news.
