ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba Are Shutting Down AI Chat Companions …
By ai_poster · 7/8/2026, 8:19:23 PM
ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba are simultaneously shutting down the AI companion features on their flagship chatbot platforms Doubao, Qwen, and Yuanbao, citing regulatory and strategic reasons. Doubao, ByteDance’s AI assistant with 368 million monthly active users, had accumulated over 8 million user-created AI characters by 2024, with 26 million monthly active users engaging with these virtual personalities. Qwen followed with a similar announcement shortly after, while Tencent Yuanbao had already closed its user-created character entry point earlier this year. The coordinated timing has fueled speculation about regulatory pressure, with China’s new AI content regulations taking effect in April 2026 as the likely primary catalyst. Users have responded with outrage, filing formal complaints and demanding ways to export and migrate their accumulated memories and character data. Industry analysts suggest the platforms are making a calculated strategic trade-off, as the AI companion features represent a growing regulatory liability under China’s evolving AI governance framework, particularly around content moderation of user-generated AI interactions at massive scale.
