A Barna Group survey of 1,514 U.S. adults conducted in November 2025 and 442 Protestant pastors conducted in December 2025 found that practicing Christians use artificial intelligence more than most Americans. About 44% of practicing Christians say they use AI “very often” or “often” in their personal lives, 13 percentage points higher than the 31% of U.S. adults overall. On the job, 39% of practicing Christians reported using the technology often compared with 26% of U.S. adults nationwide. Only 16% of pastors say they use AI “often” personally and 5% “very often,” while 45% used it “not very much” or “not at all.” Around 12% of pastors feel prepared to give guidance on using AI. Nearly half of practicing Christians say they would trust the technology with their spiritual growth, though most use AI for learning, getting advice, or improving writing rather than interpreting Scripture. Earlier Barna research suggests about a third of practicing American Christians say AI spiritual advice is as good as a pastor’s. Advocacy group Tech Justice Law pushes for AI products to be “safe by design, subject to oversight, and transparent to their users.”
