The Centre has established four Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Artificial Intelligence (AI), including a newly announced AI-CoE for Education at IIT Madras, as part of its vision to "Make AI in India and Make AI work for India", the Ministry of Education informed Parliament. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said that three AI-CoEs in agriculture, sustainable cities and healthcare were launched following the Union Budget 2023-24 announcement with a total outlay of Rs 990 crore, led by IIT Ropar, IIT Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, respectively. The Union Budget 2025-26 announced a fourth Centre of Excellence for AI for Education with an allocation of Rs 500 crore, established at IIT Madras, taking the total government commitment to Rs 1,490 crore. During the pilot phase in FY 2023-24 and FY 2024-25, the government released Rs 27 crore to consortiums of institutions. In FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27, financial support of Rs 74.39 crore was released to IIT Kanpur, Rs 62.64 crore to IIT Ropar, Rs 69.07 crore to IISc Bengaluru and Rs 43 crore to IIT Madras.
