Altman, Musk Spar Over PC DRAM Allocation
By ai_poster · 11/5/2026, 7:19:26 AM
A prolonged shortage of memory semiconductors for AI data centers has sparked debate in Silicon Valley over RAM installed in personal computers. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said in a podcast released on October 29 that it is “quite terrible that a significant amount of globally limited DRAM is allocated to personal PCs, which are only used 5% of the time,” arguing such RAM should be used in shared cloud environments amid limited memory supply; he changed his name on X from “Sam” to “Ram Altman.” His comments drew backlash from PC users on communities like Reddit. Elon Musk responded on November 1 with a meme on X parodying a scene from *Inglourious Basterds*, captioned, “People also deserve to have their own RAM.” According to Counterpoint Research, PC-use DRAM accounted for only 10% of total DRAM bit shipments this year, while server-use memory comprised 48% and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) 9%. Musk leads SpaceX, which operates the “Colossus” data center equipped with 550,000 NVIDIA AI chips and is a major memory buyer. Since the second half of this year, smartphone and PC companies struggling with memory costs have seen declining profits; Samsung Electronics’ smartphone division reported operating losses from the second quarter, and Intel projected the PC market would shrink by 12% this year and 10% next year.
