Lin Enqi, a 21-year-old student from Singapore, helped revive her family's debt-ridden neighbourhood grocery store while pursuing her university education, according to a report by CNA Insider cited by Moneycontrol. When she took charge of the business at the age of 18, the store was burdened with debts exceeding S$30,000 (about ₹20 lakh) and facing declining sales. Enqi used ChatGPT to tackle operational challenges, including organising inventory after the store adopted a new point-of-sale system. The store carried more than 8,000 products, and manual sorting would have taken nearly a week, but Enqi completed the task in about two days using ChatGPT. She also sought AI-generated ideas to boost sales, with ChatGPT suggesting offering vouchers linked to minimum spending thresholds to encourage higher basket sizes while protecting margins. Enqi later created a custom GPT model with support from Nanyang Polytechnic's Centre for Applied AI, trained on the store's operations, previous promotions and customer trends, which could recommend marketing campaigns tied to festivals and seasonal events. She also uses ChatGPT as a research tool to track retail trends and make business decisions more efficiently. Enqi told CNA Insider that AI became a practical business assistant that helped her save time and make more informed decisions, highlighting how small businesses are increasingly experimenting with artificial intelligence tools for inventory management, customer engagement, marketing and research.
