Meta Platforms launched Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter open-weight model, on Monday, and announced plans to release the weights of its flagship Muse Spark 1.2 model, directly challenging China’s dominance in open-weight artificial intelligence. In a 6,500-word blog post published the same day, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would resume releasing open-source models to deliver “personal superintelligence to billions of people and small businesses.” Analysts said the releases position Meta against top Chinese open-weight models by offering competitive performance without geopolitical concerns. Kyle Chan, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, noted that many American users and companies would prefer building with American models to avoid compliance and reputational risks associated with Chinese models. Mark Witzke of the University of California, San Diego, added that more US options could make Chinese models facing regulatory uncertainty less attractive. The new offerings compete directly with top Chinese alternatives across both flagship and lightweight tiers, potentially luring American customers anxious about looming regulatory restrictions in Washington.
