Translated, founded in 1999 by Marco Trombetti and his wife Isabelle, combines proprietary AI with a network of more than 400,000 professional translators to serve over 500,000 customers across 200 languages, including Airbnb, SpaceX, and Uber. Its technologies include TranslationOS, Lara, ModernMT, T-Rank, Matecat, MateSub, and MateDub. Trombetti said the company approaches translation as a research problem, building its own machine translation technology, including Lara, which he said outperforms Google Translate and DeepL, and ModernMT, an adaptive neural engine. The company is coordinating DVPS, a €29 million European Union project on multimodal AI with 20 institutions, including Oxford, ETH Zurich, and the Alan Turing Institute. This year, Translated is partnering with the Vatican to provide real-time translations of Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in 60 languages. Trombetti, a computer scientist, and Isabelle, a linguist, started the company after watching the internet change information flow, believing language would become a bottleneck and that combining machine intelligence with human expertise could improve translation. The core offering is professional translation delivered through TranslationOS, which helps large companies manage multilingual content.
