Elon Musk’s X platform announced on April 11, Eastern Time, that its standalone encrypted messaging app, XChat, will launch on the App Store on April 17. XChat features end-to-end encryption, zero advertisements, and no tracking, and allows global users to communicate using only their X accounts, directly competing with Meta’s WhatsApp, Apple’s iMessage, Telegram, and Signal. The app’s architecture was rewritten using the Rust language and includes "Bitcoin-style" end-to-end encryption. XChat’s functional design targets four competitor categories: traditional social and communication giants, privacy benchmark applications, payment and financial platforms, and search engines and virtual assistants. Specifically, it challenges Meta and Apple by not requiring a phone number and being cross-platform, undermining iMessage’s closed-loop advantage. It aims to balance feature diversity and extreme security compared to Telegram and Signal. As X Money enters public beta in 2026, XChat will integrate real-time P2P transfers and cryptocurrency payments, posing a risk of user churn for payment platforms like PayPal. Additionally, through Grok AI, XChat could become a preferred gateway for information, potentially impacting Google. The launch marks a critical step toward X’s "Everything App" goal and represents a strategic disruption of the existing digital ecosystem.
