These apps use AI to create fake nude images of real individuals without their consent, generating nonconsensual intimate images (NCII) similar to deepfake technology. The letters identify these apps as available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and point out that the companies aren’t enforcing their own developer policies that ban apps facilitating harassment or generating harmful content. By hosting these apps, they enable widespread harm, particularly for women and minors. The City Attorney’s office has flagged 13 apps across both stores. While cease-and-desist letters are demands rather than court orders, failing to address them could lead to litigation. This action reflects a growing legal and legislative effort against nonconsensual AI imagery, with several U.S. states having already enacted laws criminalizing the creation or distribution of NCII.
