Panelists argued AI could supercharge efforts to slash regulations and downsize the federal government. Ben Zipperer, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, worried that “wholesale implementation of AI will provide them a social veneer” to destroy public sector portions, adding that improper usage could lead to individuals losing benefits or shaky legal justifications. Zipperer emphasized there is no market factor in government to push back on poor AI implementation, unlike the private sector. High-profile examples include Department of Government Efficiency staffers in 2025 prompting ChatGPT to assess National Endowment for the Humanities grants and respond in fewer than 120 characters.
