Carnegie Mellon University’s NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making (NSF AI-SDM) and Meta’s AI for Good program announced a partnership on June 16, 2026, to develop dynamic situation reports using AI tools to help first responders address natural disasters like wildfires, hurricanes and severe winter storms. NSF AI-SDM researchers will analyze aggregated mobility and connectivity data from Meta’s AI for Good program and incorporate it into visualizations, combined with satellite imagery and Meta’s open-source AI models including Segment Anything, DINO and large language models. These tools could help determine compliance with evacuation orders, show where populations remain or when communities begin returning after a disaster. The project will evaluate the tools during natural disasters occurring in 2026 to determine which work best, and NSF AI-SDM will share this work with state and local emergency management agencies to gather feedback for future development of more useful, interactive and automated data tools.
