At a joint seminar hosted by the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and Wood Mackenzie on June 16 at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul, experts stated that global AI competition is shifting from algorithm rivalry to a "scaling up" race for power infrastructure, industrial data, and regulatory foundations. Chris Seiple, Vice Chairman of Wood Mackenzie, emphasized that power quality and load response capabilities are now core factors for AI data center competitiveness, noting that surging AI power demand in the United States creates volatility risks traditional grids cannot withstand. Seiple highlighted opportunities for Korean companies, with exports of ultra-high voltage transformers and cables booming, and demand expected to explode for battery energy storage systems (BESS), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and battery backup units (BBU). He recommended Korea aggressively foster AI data center power stabilization packages as a next-generation growth engine. Meanwhile, the U.S. is expanding its market through defense and security public procurement, the EU will implement its "AI Act" in August, Taiwan has become a supply chain hub, and Japan is supporting domestic cloud firms. KAIST Professor Kim Minki stated that Korea needs a "Korean-style AX strategy" to break into the global infrastructure market.
