SpaceX released version 4.5 of its Grok gen AI bot last month, which tripled token consumption. The company has no intention of slowing AI spending; its latest fiscal quarter CapEx jumped sixfold to $18.4 billion, with $15.8 billion on AI compute resources, up from $7.7 billion in Q1, while its AI business posted an operating loss of $1.3 billion. CFO Bret Johnsen said CapEx will remain at similar levels for the next couple of quarters, citing "efficient" spending with "less than a one-year payback" on AI compute. This year, SpaceX signed compute capacity agreements with Google and Anthropic worth $920 million and $1.25 billion per month, respectively. Elon Musk said Starlink could deliver a majority of the world's internet in less than 10 years, driven by AI and robotics bandwidth demand, noting the average human outputs less than one bit-per-second over a day (86,400 seconds), while computers do billions of bits per second. He called Grok 4.5 "a huge improvement," with Grok 4.6 coming "probably next week," Grok 4.7 in "three or four weeks," and Grok 5 before the end of the year.
