Zurich, a city with a population of just over 400,000, has become a secret artificial intelligence hub, attracting research centers from Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Anthropic and Disney Research. What started as Google’s decision to establish its largest engineering hub outside the United States has evolved into one of the world’s densest ecosystems for AI research. Zurich’s advantages include its location in the heart of Europe, political stability, and regulatory certainty. Switzerland has ranked first in the Global Innovation Index for more than a decade and spends more than 3% of its GDP on research and development. Google recently committed $1 million to support the Swiss National AI Institute. Although salaries and operating costs are relatively high by European standards, they remain significantly lower than comparable roles in Silicon Valley. More than 60% of Swiss venture capital flows into deep-tech startups, the highest proportion of any major economy, and according to the Swiss Deep Tech Report 2026, Switzerland leads Europe in deep-tech investment per capita.
