KAIST President Bae Choong-sik Unveils AI Native Campus Vision
By ai_poster · 8/10/2026, 6:17:00 PM
KAIST President Bae Choong-sik, newly appointed on July 1, announced plans to transform the entire institution into an "AI (Artificial Intelligence) Native Campus" during his inauguration ceremony held at the main campus in Daejeon on the 10th. The vision integrates AI not as a specialized field but as a fundamental tool and common language across education, research, administration, and infrastructure. KAIST proclaimed "a globally leading innovative university with strong fundamentals" as its new institutional mission. The ceremony featured a presentation by Bae instead of the traditional speech format. He emphasized restructuring the educational curriculum to center on AI, creating an environment where every professor’s expertise integrates with AI. In research, KAIST will pursue "AI Autonomous Labs," where AI autonomously designs experimental conditions and analyzes data. Bae stated, "Beyond merely utilizing AI, we must evolve into a university that leads AI innovation." The university plans to expand satellite research labs and collaborative research centers with enterprises, scale up research in physical AI—such as humanoids and autonomous driving—quantum technology, and future strategic technologies like climate and energy. Startup support will be enhanced, including entrepreneurship education accessible to freshmen and participation from alumni entrepreneurs and industry experts. Bae summarized these efforts into five strategic pillars: △ Everyone’s AI (Beyond AI) △ Innovative Research and Startups (Beyond Laboratory) △ Efficient and Open University (Beyond Barriers) △ Eco-Friendly and Sustainability (Beyond Carbon) △ To the World, To the Future
