Google has launched Gemini Robotics 2, a new artificial intelligence model designed to power the next generation of humanoid robots. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis announced that the model allows robots to perform tasks that were previously difficult or impossible, such as tying delicate knots and working together to complete complex workflows. In a post on X, Hassabis stated, "Gemini Robotics 2 is here, with our new suite of models, robots can now reason through every movement to manage tasks that weren’t possible before, like tying delicate knots - and even team up to solve complex workflows." Google explained in a blog post that Gemini Robotics 2 equips different hardware platforms with high dexterity, enabling control of a five-fingered hand to tie a knot or screw in a lightbulb, while also managing parallel grippers for complex packing tasks. The Alphabet-owned company is also introducing multi-robot collaboration, allowing different types of robots to communicate and work together to solve tasks a single robot cannot handle alone. Google noted that most robots are pre-programmed or teleoperated for narrow, repetitive sequences, lacking the ability to learn or adapt to unpredictable environments, and that transferring learned skills between robot bodies remains difficult. Gemini Robotics 2 enables robots to reason through every movement, allowing a humanoid to walk, crouch, stretch, and manipulate objects to clean a cluttered room, and can run locally on-device.
