In early 2026, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the company's $7.3 billion AI data centre in Fairwater, Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, as the "world's most powerful AI data centre." Three residents of the adjacent village of Sturtevant filed a class-action lawsuit against the data centre, alleging it is emitting "unreasonable and excessive noise" causing property damages through private nuisance and negligence. The lawsuit states the noise from "diesel generators and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems including chillers, cooling towers, air-handling units and condenser fans" is "consistent and pervasive," and that Microsoft failed to mitigate it through "adequate acoustic barriers, shields or walls." A complainant, Amy Cimbalnik, described the noise as "similar to the whirring engine of a freight train parked nearby" around the clock. A Sturtevant resident reported construction pounding from "sunrise past sunset daily" for two years, followed by a new 24/7 mechanical hum. Microsoft acknowledged the lawsuit, stating it is "committed to being a good neighbour."
