In June, Hong Kong’s total exports jumped 53.4 percent year-on-year, rising to HK$641.1 billion after a 40.8 percent increase in May, driven by strong global demand for AI-related electronic products. Total imports increased 45.4 percent year-on-year to HK$693 billion, resulting in a visible trade deficit of HK$52 billion, equivalent to 7.5 percent of the value of imports. For the first half of 2026, total exports surged 39.1 percent and imports rose 40.6 percent. Exports to Asia rose 54.4 percent, with notable increases to Singapore (83 percent), Taiwan region (79.9 percent), the Chinese mainland (59.2 percent), Vietnam (55.9 percent), and Thailand (52.3 percent). Exports to the United States rose 114.3 percent and to Mexico 94.2 percent. A HKSAR government spokesman noted that robust AI demand should continue supporting trade performance, but the recent escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East deserves attention. Lawmaker Tommy Chung Ki-fung said international buyers are leveraging Hong Kong’s logistics network to restructure supply chains and replenish inventories.
