A year after Mark Zuckerberg spent more than $14 billion to bring Alexandr Wang and a team of Scale AI engineers into Meta, the company released its first proprietary frontier AI model, Muse Spark, in April of this year. However, Meta does not yet have proof that Muse Spark can close the gap on Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT. Meta’s reputation as an accessible AI developer took a hit in April of last year when the release of Llama 4 failed to generate excitement, prompting Zuckerberg to reconsider the company’s direction. Two months later, Zuckerberg announced a $14.3 billion investment to acquire roughly half of Scale AI and bring Wang on board as Meta's Chief AI Officer. Wang acknowledged on Bloomberg Tech that internal testing flagged safety concerns, including "high-risk areas in the course of early training, particularly around bio risk," that made an open release untenable. Muse Spark was designed to integrate into Meta's core applications, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as the Ray-Ban Meta glasses and the standalone Meta AI app.
