Jeff Dean spent his final 48 hours at Google busier than an average workday, according to his schedule shared at the top conference KDD 2026. He first announced his departure to 139 "close colleagues" in a video conference at 8:30 a.m., where attendees were emotional and sent "heart and sad emojis like crazy." At 9 a.m., he sent an internal farewell letter to all Google employees, confirming he would leave with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to found Discovery Loop, aiming to use AI and automation tools to accelerate machine learning, scientific and engineering research in a smaller environment. He attended a farewell gathering with about 1500 attendees, then went to yoga and played football as usual. That evening, he replied to farewell messages until 2:30 a.m., sleeping only 4 hours. On Thursday afternoon (August 6), he closed his Google laptop for the last time and returned his employee badge and work notebook. At 23:59:59, he wrote his new identity as "Unemployed," but just after midnight, he started his new job as Co-founder and CEO of Discovery Loop.
