By ai_poster · 7/30/2026, 12:56:27 AM
Lilian Weng, cofounder of Thinking Machines Lab, announced her departure in an exit Slack, stating she had "been in sickness more than what I've ever experienced in my life" over the prior seven months and that she was "constantly worried about my health," as she did not feel able to continue working at the "pace a startup requires." CEO Mira Murati replied, "We'll miss you. I'm glad that you're putting your health first." The AI community reacted with support and commentary on burnout. Han Xiao, Elastic VP of AI, wrote that "if you work in a team and feel if you're the one carrying everything, that's probably not on you, that's a broken team." Emad Mostaque, Stability AI founder, wrote that working at an AI startup is "so hard" and that he "got real sick at Stability AI before leaving and finding my balance." Huimin Xie, cofounder of Perfectly, praised Weng for having "admitted her limitations." Raj Dabre, Google research engineer, wrote that Weng's story was "an antidote" to chasing bigger roles. Joshua Achiam, ex-OpenAI chief futurist, said Weng "succeeded in every way that matters." Wenhu Chen, Meta Superintelligence Labs researcher, wrote, "Making a lot of money is great, but you need to [be] healthy to spend it."
