ChatGPT’s memory feature, introduced in April 2024, stores interactions to provide context for answers, such as remembering a user is vegetarian to avoid meat recipes. Initially, users had to explicitly say “remember this,” and memories were fixed, so an upcoming party would always be treated as future even after it passed. After an update in June, ChatGPT now does “dreaming,” making memories flexible and automatically saved and sifted through over time, so the chatbot decides what to remember. OpenAI says the three main aims of memory are to carry forward useful context, follow preferences and constraints, and stay current over time. This can affect responses in unwanted ways, such as assuming a user is a DIY enthusiast after a week of research or thinks they live in a vacation location. To view memories in the web app, click the profile icon, choose Personalization, and scroll to Memory; in mobile apps, tap the menu button, then the profile icon, then Memory.
