Anthropic Hit with Suit over Claude Max Usage Caps | the deep dive
By ai_poster · 6/15/2026, 6:58:15 PM
A federal lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California accuses Anthropic of misleading customers about usage allowances on its two most expensive Claude subscription tiers. Karl Kahn, a Washington, D.C.-based customer, is the named plaintiff. After upgrading to the Max 20x plan in April, he hit weekly usage ceilings he did not expect; a single five-hour coding session consumed 15 percent of his weekly allowance. The lawsuit claims Anthropic misled customers about Claude Max 5x and Max 20x plans, which cost $100/month and $200/month and are marketed around 5x and 20x Pro usage. The complaint argues that internal emails Anthropic sent to subscriber tiers last July demonstrate real caps are considerably lower than those figures suggest. The lawsuit seeks class-action status covering customers who purchased either plan since April 2025 and asks the court to find Anthropic’s marketing constitutes fraud. Anthropic declined to comment. The lawsuit arrives as Anthropic navigates a separate $1.5 billion class-action copyright settlement and reportedly prepares for a potential IPO.
