Globe editorial: Keeping at bay the dangers of AI
By ai_poster · 7/26/2026, 6:18:48 PM
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang analogized AI safety to creating social norms like sidewalks, but Geoffrey Hinton, the Canadian “godfather of AI,” countered that “cars aren’t going to gang up on you and take over ... AI is just far more powerful.” Hinton instead advocated for AI regulation as a “steering wheel,” stating, “The whole point of regulation is not to prevent you innovating but to make sure that you innovate in a direction that makes the technology help people rather than hurt them.” During a visit to The Globe and Mail editorial board, Hinton noted AI’s current benefits, including medical breakthroughs for Parkinson’s and rare diseases, but warned of potential dangers. He said the best expert guess for the likelihood of an apocalyptic or extinction-type scenario is “10 or 20 per cent,” making AI “one of the most dangerous technologies ever invented.” He argued it is too risky to leave development to Silicon Valley techno-libertarians, as AI could cause employment and social upheavals and a “crisis of self.” The federal Liberal government believes such concerns can be brushed aside.
