Volvo Car Corporation said on the 4th that it is expanding its partnership with NVIDIA Corporation and developing AI-based autonomous driving safety technology for use in its next-generation models. The two companies plan to combine Volvo’s capabilities in vehicle safety research and design with NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated computing technologies, covering highways, high-traffic urban areas and parking, among other settings, and aim to develop technology that can travel from origin to destination in complex, real-world road conditions. Volvo plans to introduce NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion’s sensor and computing architecture, Halos OS, Alpamayo Stack driving software and other technologies in its next-generation vehicles, integrating vehicle safety systems with computing and driving software. The technologies will be introduced in phases, including “eyes-off” driving, which does not require drivers to watch the road ahead, and “mind-off” driving, which does not require them to continuously pay attention to driving conditions, and Volvo plans to incorporate safety research findings accumulated on real roads into the development process. Volvo and NVIDIA have been working together since 2017.
