Tamny asserts the controls have instead driven "feverish efforts within the Chinese technology sector to reduce foreign dependencies," citing Huawei’s introduction of the Mate Pro 60 smartphone in 2023, which was "close" to an iPhone. He concludes that the export controls have "played into the hands of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intent on achieving 'independence' from American technology giants."
