SpaceX Buying Tesla's Robots and Cabs Would Allow Tesla to Be an 'EV …

Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki, commented on reports that Tesla Inc. could explore separating its China operations amid discussions about a possible merger with Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. Gerber wrote on X that "Tesla needs Tesla China" and suggested, "Maybe Tesla should sell the robots and cabs to SpaceX and let Tesla be an EV company again." His comments followed a Wall Street Journal report that Tesla advisers had discussed options for its China business, including a spinoff, sale or closure, though the plans remained uncertain. Musk rejected the report, writing on X, "This has never even come up in a discussion ever. Absurdly fake news." China is central to Tesla’s global operations, with its Shanghai Gigafactory serving as the company’s largest manufacturing facility and a major export hub. Tesla sources more than 95% of the components used in China-made Model 3 and refreshed Model Y vehicles locally, and China is Tesla’s second-largest market. A Tesla-SpaceX merger could face geopolitical and regulatory hurdles because SpaceX is a major U.S. defense contractor. SpaceX priced its IPO at $135 per share on June 12, raising $75 billion and valuing the company at roughly $1.75 trillion. Musk recently declined to rule out combining the companies, saying their businesses are becoming increasingly interconnected.
