OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has sparked widespread debate after suggesting that parents use the company’s ChatGPT Work product to create personalised morning podcasts for their children during the drive to school. In a post on X, Altman suggested parents connect their family calendars and share information about their children’s hobbies and upcoming activities with ChatGPT, which could then generate a customised daily podcast covering events such as football matches, birthdays and relevant news. The proposal received strong criticism from many social media users, including Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch, who responded, “What if you just talked to your children,” a comment that gained significantly more engagement than the original message. Many users argued that technology should support family interactions rather than replace direct conversations. During an earlier television interview, Altman said he could not imagine raising a newborn without ChatGPT, while acknowledging that previous generations successfully raised children without AI tools. OpenAI has recently increased its focus on developing products designed for parents and children, advertising roles aimed at creating trust-based AI experiences for families. Other technology companies are also exploring similar ideas; for example, Meta is testing AI-powered tools capable of generating personalised bedtime stories.
