OpenAI is preparing for a mild AI winter
By ai_poster · 7/18/2026, 5:09:41 PM
OpenAI has recently taken several strategic shifts, including discontinuing two consumer products, Sora and Atlas, and abandoning its original plan to own and build data centres, now seeking to lease capacity from third-party providers. Almost a year ago, OpenAI had announced Stargate, a joint venture with Oracle and Softbank, which was supposed to invest $500 billion in AI data centers in the US, but that plan is gone. OpenAI also put on-hold a plan to build a data centre in the UK, citing “restrictive regulations” and “high energy costs”. In response, the UK AI Minister stated that the “only thing that has changed [since] the moment of those commitments…has been the financing environment for OpenAI”. More recently, OpenAI proposed giving the U.S. government a 5% stake in the company, worth roughly $42.6 billion, as CEO Sam Altman believes giving the public a financial interest is the best way to share the upside of AI.
