China has completed what it says is the world's first commercial implantation of an invasive brain-computer interface (BCI), as Neuralink continues human trials in the United States but is still awaiting full approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for commercial use. Chinese doctors implanted a coin-sized brain chip in a patient with a spinal cord injury. The surgery was performed on Monday at Huashan Hospital. The patient had impaired hand movement following a spinal cord injury caused by a car accident 10 years ago. The implanted device, called NEO, was developed by Shanghai-based startup Neuracle Medical Technology. The NEO device received approval from China's National Medical Products Administration on March 13, becoming the world's first commercially approved invasive brain-computer interface. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's Neuralink has enrolled more than 20 patients in clinical trials for its first brain-computer interface product, Telepathy, but has not yet received full commercial approval from the U.S. FDA.
