Netflix & FutureCel on AI, Craft and What Gets Made | Runway News

Netflix and FutureCel leaders Girish Balakrishnan and Joel Kuwahara agree that AI serves storytellers, with the story as the core purpose. Balakrishnan, leading creative innovation at Netflix, describes AI as "just another chapter" in the company's history of combining technology and filmmaking. Filmmakers are using AI to design costumes and sets early, test lighting, previsualize stunts, and achieve effects otherwise impossible. On the period piece Brazil ‘70, directors Pedro and Paulo Morelli wanted to "tilt the camera up" from the actor playing Pelé to reveal a packed stadium. Netflix's visual effects hub Eyeline blended practical photography, traditional effects, and generative tools to fill the stadiums with emotional crowds, saving shots that "would have been cut." Kuwahara, who spent more than thirty years in animation from The Simpsons in the 1990s to co-founding Bento Box before launching FutureCel, notes the industry has faced new tools before, from hand-painted cels to digital ink and paint, and paper storyboards to tablets, each met with excitement and anxiety. He respects artists who choose traditional methods, but says the industry has "only ever moved forward." What draws him to AI is what animation has never had enough of: chances.
