KAIST study finds generative AI portray older adults as warm but less…

A study led by Choi Mun-jung, a professor at the KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy, published on the 28th in a special issue of *The Gerontologist*, found that OpenAI's Generative AI model GPT-4o reflects age-related stereotypes. The team asked GPT-4o to describe characteristics of each age group from the teens to the 90s and collected 900 sentences. Analyzing these through the dimensions of "warmth" and "competence," the study confirmed a tendency to portray older adults as kind and warm while depicting their agency and expertise as relatively low. People 60 and older scored high on "warmth," while "competence" tended to be expressed as lower than that of younger generations. The researchers noted repeated use of similar expressions for those in their 70s and older, showing their willingness to express opinions actively and act proactively relatively less. The team warned that such expressions could reinforce social prejudice and lead to "digital ageism," blocking older adults' use of technology. Choi Mun-jung stated, "AI bias is not just a technological issue but a societal one."
