Microsoft has admitted that it force-installed the OneDrive Photos app on Windows 11 PCs, stating that the app "is part of the OneDrive app, so it arrived with a OneDrive update rather than as a separate download" and "brings the OneDrive photo experience from the web and mobile apps to the Windows desktop." The app appeared on production Windows 11 PCs over the past few weeks, even for users without a personal Microsoft account, causing outrage. Microsoft would not acknowledge that the app was also pushed to enterprise PCs managed through Intune, despite the app working only with a personal Microsoft account. The app is installed at C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.App.exe, while the primary OneDrive is at C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\OneDrive.exe. Microsoft said it had nothing more to share about enterprise PCs, but Windows Latest understands the rollout to enterprise PCs was not intentional, as Microsoft intended to force-install OneDrive Photos only on consumer PCs. Microsoft told Windows Latest that OneDrive Photos is automatically added to all Windows 11 PCs where the OneDrive sync client is present, and the app already had access to all images on a PC, including screenshots, when first opened. It also includes features like Moments, which surfaces random collections from your history.
