Uber cuts work time by 80 percent with AI, investment payoff unclear
By ai_poster · 9/19/2026, 9:17:19 AM
Business Insider reported on Sept. 17 that recently laid-off Uber employees said the company has expanded AI adoption across tasks including internal Q&A, customer support and sales preparation, with some handing a substantial share of their work to AI tools. A former employee said that after using AI tools for several weeks, task completion time fell to about one-fifth of the previous level, and an advertising employee said managers encouraged Google Gemini and ChatGPT for client meetings. Uber operates an AI chatbot called Genie across internal Slack channels, and a former customer service employee said staff used Glean, which searches internal documents, sometimes pasting AI-generated answers directly into customer chats. Cory X, an evaluation specialist on Uber's generative AI team, said internal guidelines warned against excessive reliance on AI. Some employees assessed Uber introduced AI more cautiously than other technology companies, running briefing sessions and office hours and limiting AI-generated images in external communications. One employee said Uber began cutting or ending credits for some AI services, including Anthropic's Claude, starting in the first half of this year, with management saying it had used up this year's Claude-related budget but had not confirmed productivity gains matching AI tool costs.
