Google's AI Boom Is Creating a New Kind of Tension
By ai_poster · 8/8/2026, 1:00:03 AM
Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, reported Google Cloud revenue surged 82% to $24.8 billion during the second quarter as enterprise customers increased spending on AI infrastructure. Concurrently, several prominent researchers, including Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, plan to form a startup, while Demis Hassabis is stepping away from daily management of Google DeepMind to focus on longer-term research. These changes occur as Google decides how to divide scarce computing capacity among developing frontier models, supporting its own products, and serving paying cloud customers. Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over DeepMind's daily operations, potentially bringing the AI lab closer to Google Cloud and its commercial priorities. This approach could improve returns on Google's infrastructure spending, but losing leading researchers may make it harder to produce breakthroughs needed to stay ahead of OpenAI and Anthropic. Investors will watch whether Google can accelerate Gemini development without weakening the research culture that established its early AI lead.
