OpenAI is reportedly developing a portable, screenless smart speaker intended as a household AI companion, powered by its generative AI chatbot ChatGPT. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the device will control smart appliances, play media, respond to messages, and answer questions, but will also feature moving mechanical parts to express itself, designed to feel "humanlike" and be "a physical manifestation of OpenAI's ChatGPT." The device will actively gather data about users, accessing their emails and using cameras and sensors to learn owners' habits and offer assistance without prompting. Bloomberg's sources support earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal that OpenAI's hardware is designed with constant surveillance in mind, with the Journal reporting that the product "will be capable of being fully aware of a user's surroundings and life" and that OpenAI plans to ship "100 million" of these devices, aiming for it to become "a third core device a person would put on a desk after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone."
