Models such as Alibaba’s Qwen and those from Moonshot AI have emerged as notable competitors to proprietary systems from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Atkins argues that security concerns—specifically the fear that models could serve as vehicles for cyberattacks—are largely overstated, explaining that once an organization downloads and deploys a model within its own secure environment, the original developer loses all access. Because these models are open-weight, companies can perform detailed inspections and security audits. Atkins views scenarios of malicious backdoors as highly unlikely and emphasizes that the primary defense is conducting thorough testing for bias, toxicity, and security vulnerabilities. Instead of bans, Atkins advocates for the U.S. to accelerate its own open-source AI development, noting that Arcee monitors global advancements, including from China, to improve its capabilities.
