OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with U.S. lawmakers Wednesday (July 29) and told reporters he supports federal artificial intelligence legislation, according to Bloomberg. Altman said he was “certainly” supportive of AI cybersecurity guardrail legislation but did not discuss specific legislative proposals. During the meetings, Altman discussed OpenAI’s next AI model, stating, “We talked about our new model and what it’s going to take for America to remain excited about AI.” Politico reported that Altman declined to reveal new capabilities of the upcoming model, and when asked about its release, he said, “Not sure. That’s part of what we’re here to talk about.” Altman did not commit to supporting mandatory vetting for frontier models but said it is important the federal government be able to test frontier models with new levels of capability. CNBC reported Altman will meet this week with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, along with senior Trump administration officials, lawmakers and economists. An Aug. 1 deadline exists for federal agencies to develop a framework for voluntary AI model assessments, included in a June executive order signed by President Donald Trump. PYMNTS reported the June 2 executive order seeks access to new AI models for up to 30 days before release. OpenAI said July 21 that a security incident reported by Hugging Face was caused by OpenAI models during cybersecurity testing, described as “an unprecedented cyber incident.”
