Google DeepMind has developed an AI model called WeatherNext AI that predicts tropical cyclones, including their track, intensity, and wind structure, up to 15 days in advance. The model was built by AI researchers and engineers at Google DeepMind and Google Research, with expert forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), the UK Met Office, and weather agencies worldwide. The WeatherNext team says the model bridges the gap between global weather forecasting and cyclone prediction, achieving state-of-the-art accuracy through its training, architecture, and approach to low resolution inputs. It was trained on around 20 terabytes of global atmospheric data and historical observations across 5,000 historical storms. Separately, enterprise AI platform Workday released a report titled “The copy/paste economy: Why task-oriented AI is failing the enterprise in India,” which finds that human workers are bearing the brunt of disconnected systems, acting as a ‘glue’ between them. The report also highlights that embedded AI results in better value and that trust in AI depends on decision-making efficiency.
