Silicon Valley leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, are warning against a broad government crackdown on open-weight AI systems following a breakthrough Chinese AI model. In a blog post released Monday, Amodei rejected claims that Anthropic supports a ban on open-weight models, stating, “Anthropic has never advocated for a ban on open-weights models,” but noted these models pose risks because it is “difficult to apply guardrails” or “monitor their usage.” He called for the US to adopt policy interventions to slow China’s AI development and said all models should go through mandatory safety testing before release. Amodei also defended Anthropic’s decision not to sign a letter from tech industry leaders—including Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella—urging Washington to avoid curbs on open-source models, disagreeing with its assertion that open-weight models make it easier to develop safeguards. He advocated for strong chip controls and policy action against alleged misuse of US models by Chinese competitors. Huang is scheduled on Tuesday to meet with Senator Mark Warner, who last week called for mandatory safety testing of cutting-edge models.
