Democrat James Talarico won the Texas Senate race despite Elon Musk spending more than $200 million to stop him, making Talarico the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Texas since 1988. Democrat Gina Hinojosa flipped the Governor's seat, defeating Greg Abbott, whom Musk had backed. Musk put in nearly half a billion dollars this election cycle, almost all of it backing Republicans, far more than the $290,000,000 he spent to help elect Donald Trump in 2024. Shares of Tesla and SpaceX fell, while broader tech stocks also came under pressure. The new Congress could mean greater scrutiny of Big Tech, AI and the massive data center build out across the country. Governor Elect Hinojosa wants a pause on new projects until tougher rules are in place, and outgoing Governor Greg Abbott had already frozen new permits before the vote. In Florida, Republican Byron Donalds, a data center supporter backed by millions in AI money, won the governor's race. When the new Congress convenes in January, sweeping new laws could be unlikely as Trump still holds the veto.
