The National-Security Case For Sovereign Frontier AI
By ai_poster · 6/16/2026, 6:39:32 AM
On 12 June 2026, the American government, citing national security, ordered Anthropic to cut off access to its two most capable models for any foreign national, anywhere on earth. Unable to verify the nationality of every user in real time, the firm switched the models off for everybody, locking out Indian developers and companies who had been using the same tools as anyone in Silicon Valley. The episode may reflect a feud between the company and the Trump administration, which had earlier branded it a supply-chain risk, and access may yet be restored. However, if access to the frontier can be interrupted over what looks like a domestic political quarrel in another capital, it is not a stable foundation but closer to a loan that can be called on terms set by people under no particular obligation to India.
