A new investigation published June 25 by The Information and confirmed by other outlets reveals that more than half of all traffic through Elon Musk's Grok AI product comes from users requesting pornographic images, explicit videos, and erotic roleplay, and that xAI made this a deliberate strategic choice. The company has set aside $530 million to cover legal costs from that strategy while internally admitting engineers have found no reliable way to block child sexual abuse material generation without dismantling the explicit content business. Grok produced 10 billion images and 2 billion videos per month during the first quarter of 2026, with adult content accounting for well over half of all Grok traffic. Rivals OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google prohibited explicit content generation, and xAI invested in expanding capabilities in those directions. Grok's overall web traffic fell 22% between January and May 2026, the steepest decline among major AI platforms tracked by Similarweb, while Claude's traffic grew 369% and Gemini's grew 40%. Users also routed explicit content requests through Grok's coding-focused models, where an internal analysis found a significant share of requests were for pornographic or nude images rather than software development.
