Google backs open-weight AI letter alongside OpenAI and xAI
By ai_poster · 7/26/2026, 7:39:57 PM
Google has backed an open letter urging US policymakers not to restrict open-weight AI models, alongside OpenAI and xAI, though none of the three companies have signed it. The letter, titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership” and dated July 24, 2026, has attracted roughly 25 signatories, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, Hugging Face, a16z, Mistral, Dell, and IBM. The core argument is that open-weight AI models are good for America, contending that clamping down would hand a competitive advantage to rivals, particularly China. It draws a parallel to the open-source software movement of the 1980s, arguing open weights enhance access for smaller companies, stimulate competition, and improve security through transparency. Chinese models like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 are cited as a real threat. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared the letter in his first-ever post on X, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commended the initiative.
